SoundBlaster Audigy 2

The latest and greatest audio hardware from Creative Labs reviewed.

Creative officially unveiled the sequel to the Audigy soundcard a couple of months ago amid much excitement among those in the know. The original Audigy is something of a landmark in audio hardware, cementing Creative as the industry leader. The anticipation is therefore high that the Audigy 2 will embody yet another step towards audio-excellence for PC owners.

Whilst technologically-wise the card isn’t as revolutionary as the original Audigy player, solid progress is displayed in the shape of DVD audio support, 192kHz/24-bit playback, 6.1 channel audio support, Dolby Digital EX decoding and THX certification. Lucas Film were certainly impressed it seems, but will the canny PC upgrader be as enthusiastic about shelling out for this new piece of kit?

As ever, installation is a fairly simple prospect of removing your old audio card, and locating your new toy in a free PCI socket, this done you’ll need to replace your casing, boot-up your PC, and use the bundled drivers and software to get your ears humming.

On this front, its pleasing to note that Creative have spruced up their software for the sequel, not only is everything a little more easy on the eye, its much simpler to use and easier to navigate as well. Not a massive improvement, but its nice to see that matters have been made easier for us, still.

With regard to the specification, here’s some technical titillation for those of you interested in comparing the cold hard facts:

High Definition Audio Quality for Playback and Recording

  • 24-bit Digital-to-Analog conversion during playback with sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz in 6.1 mode and up to 192kHz in stereo mode

  • 24-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion during recording in 8, 16 or 24-bit at sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz

  • SPDIF output up to 24-bit at 48 or 96kHz

  • ASIO™ drivers for low latency (as low as 2ms) multi-track playback and recording at 16-bit/48kHz

Advanced Audio and 3D Audio Technology

  • Dolby Digital® audio decoding to 5.1 (digital or analog modes) or Dolby Digital® EX decoding to 6.1 (analog mode only) speaker channels

  • Hardware acceleration of EAX® and EAX® Advanced HD™ for games

  • 32-bit Professional Quality Effects Engine with support for real-time digital effects like reverb and chorus across any audio source

    what are your thoughts?

    1. Yeah , works great , but not with easy creator 5.3 platinum. It 5.3 won't reconize this awsome card. Roxio is not doing any patches at this time

    5. This card is a great improvement to the AC97 card built onto my motherboard, but I can't get the S/PDIF passthrough to an external decoder to function correctly. I use this machine as a PC to TV set-top box and attach it directly to a Sony STR-DE835 amp/tuner to have it decode Dolby Digital and DTS. On activation, the stereo only reports a PCM [48kHz] signal but multi channel decoding never activates with DTS playback. This becomes very apparent when a movie with a DTS soundtrack is played, and only the front right and left speakers work when all others are silent. Using the bundled speaker calibration wizard reveals the same problem. Are there any known fixes for this, or are those of us who connect their computer to a home theatre, basically screwed?

    8. Perhaps you should just CHECK on the box or the website whether this card has SPDIF I/O's...

    9. Digital out is stereo. No ASIO 2. Trying to figure out if I can get 2X stereo, or some kind of virtual surround simulation ala Q-Sound in 4.0. Anybody know? As far as 4.1 goes, shouldn't be a problem.

    14. Hi,

24GB High Density Minidisc provides 6/192/24 and above Audio and HDTV Video ...

I thought that you might find this to be of interest.

blu-ray is a new optical disk technology that uses blue lasers to read to and write from the disc. High Density Minidisc is physically much smaller than DVD and CD, but has five times the capacity of DVD and is four times faster. This means that it can record much better quality sound and video than any variant of DVD, and each topic at http://www.blu-raytalk.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=1 illustrates an aspect of its performance and provides a simple vote for you to take.

Although all the enabling technologies are in place, the potential is so great that we need to better ascertain what people actually want from HDMD before we can release product. Hence the website includes a simple survey in the form of eight HDMD topics with polls for you to vote in. But first you need to register (using your name and a chosen password) and then login.

Then, just click on the topic of your choice, read the blurb about it and take the survey - there's just one poll for each, so it shouldn't take too long - and get your friends to voice their opinions too - we're currently defining the functionality of HDMD, so the more we know about what people actually want from it, the better ... Note, however, that as in most democratic elections, you can only vote once - once you've pressed Submit that's it - so make sure that you're happy with your choice before you press that little button ...

There are eight topics in all, each with its own poll - so ideally you could start at High Density Minidisc and work your way up. Note that they're deliberately brief so that the poll can quickly capture how you're feeling about HDMD having just read about it. As you can probably gather, it is a digital versatile disk - just a lot smaller, with five times the capacity and four times the bandwidth of DVD/DVDA/SACD. So, for example, unlike DVD-Audio, it can support six channels of 192/24 audio (in fact, six channels of 384/24 audio!)

This extra speed and capacity brings lots of benefits over DVD and new possibilities that you'll read about under each topic.

Please feel free to copy this email to friends and colleagues you think might be interested - and people you think should be.

Please email me if you require any further information. Perhaps you could get your colleagues and friends to go to the website and take part in the survey? - it shouldn't take more than ten minutes or so at most :-)

      red missing blu in

ps DVDs use a red laser, which means much lower resolution and less data on the disc than blu-ray, as it's called ...

    15. Don't buy thios card if you are a musician and want to take advantage of the 24-bit recording. It's a scam!! Boy I'm mad!!

The Audigy 2 DOES NOT record or play at 24-bit resolution with any music software, only the piddly recording program that comes with it,. which is fine for putting your vinyls onto your hard disk, but no other software can play these files. It has many other features which many people many find attractive, but I wish I'd bought an Audiophile now. Grr!
