No One Lives Forever 2

More James Bond-mocking fun from Monolith.

A little more news from Vivendi’s pseudo-ECTS event. This time on Monolith’s upcoming first-person sequel, No Ones Lives Forever 2, the long-awaited return of Kate Archer and this James Bond spoofing action game which doesn’t take itself too seriously.

I was fortunate enough to get to play the game, and I can report it’s come on leaps and bounds from the original which received mixed reviews. Indeed, the Jupiter engine developed by Monolith is looking quite superb delivering a degree of creative freedom, which, I was informed, allowed the developers to do pretty much what they wanted with the game.

The first thing I noticed (being the shallow and aesthetically pre-occupied soul I am), was the detail of the environments. I first watched my commentator play as Kate Archer through a number of Siberian environments, all of which were beautifully designed and rich, complete with falling snow and wind which added to the atmosphere greatly. I watched Kate complete one her numerous Siberian missions, as she detonated a number of targets, including a huge, crumbling bridge, after planting bombs upon them. This kind of mission is typical of what you’ll find in the game, apparently, and its pleasing to note that a little more variety is available than the standard opening-doors, collecting stuff, arrangement.

The artificial intelligence was another high-point, as I watched a Soviet Guard flip a table and use it for cover when Kate disturbed him – this may not be impressive individually but bare in mind that this Guard won’t always react in this way, he may instead dive though the door or run for cover behind a filing cabinet. The enemy behaviour is designed to be unpredictable. Some will fight, other will run for help, and some can be crept passed without the need for action. It all adds to the realism of this impressive title.

On another level, my commentator was proud to show me the team’s favourite locale, the Japanese-inspired locations, which had beautifully realised gardens and temples, and pit Kate Archer against sword-wielding Ninja’s who leap and run with terrifying speed. These were some of the toughest single-player levels, and I soon found myself dead. Rather embarrassingly.

what are your thoughts?

  1. Excellent -- this is one of the upcomming games which realize that the FPS genre isn't separated by beautiful graphics and gunplay alone (though it does have plenty of that!), but by AI. The AI in NOLF2 will be impressive, giving it's NPCs a great deal of interaction within the world for things which do not directly pertain to the player, like using the phone, hanging around the water cooler, smoking, chatting, and many others. As the FPS attempts to simulate a realistic environment around you, it is only logical that AI should be one of the focal points of any FPS. Too bad that all too-often it's overlooked.

All hail Deus Ex2 and Thief3, which will have AI and physics like we've never seen before! NOLF2 will be a great appetizer for those main courses.

  2. I've been looking forward to this game ever since I played and finsihed NOLF:the Operative. The game is just another FPS for sure, but its true light heartedness to the genre really captivated me, plus all those cool gadjects and whacky characters.

This is going to be a nice addition to my fps collection. I agree with Exmorit's comment on the AI, when fighting the Enemy the enemy should fight back smart or run away smart maybe screaming out funny one liners, but when your playing in stealth mode the AI should also not just be standing around but interating with the world where they live. The humours conversations in NOLF:Op gave the game a nice pace.. fight a little sneak around and have a laugh... ect ect.

    can't wait. Bring on NOLF2 then NOLF3 :)

  17. hi seeker,

the game nolf2 works on a 3d accelerator card with tnl support.. (Transform and lighting). Previously tnl was done by software, but now some new games require an hardware tnl support. Many old 3d cards do not have this feature.. so new games like nolf2 and spiderman:the movie cannot be played without this support.

  35. Problem:

Error message "Error initializing the renderer. In order to play NOLF2 you must have DirectX 8.1 installed and a video card that supports hardware TnL"

    Solution:

Nolf 2 requires that you have DirectX 8.1 with a TNL supported video card and a minimum of 32MB of video memory. Your video card may not support TNL and therefore will not meet the minimum requirements to play the game. It is reccomended that you either upgrade your video card or return the product.

If you have purchased this product within the last 90 days, we can offer you a refund. Please return only your original game disks and all game specific documentation. Do not return your box sleeve or any other literature included with the game. Please send the following:

  38. Ok, I did exactly what you said and it seemed to work until I actually started loading the game. (I am on the demo to see if it is really as good as everyone says). Then it would freeze my computer and/or go back to my desktop (win ME: I know its bad) and play the same parcel of music over and over again... like it is right as I type. It's annoying, but I am more annoyed that I cant play the game! Any help is greatly appereciated, and I know I am not the only one!! Thanx in advance!

  39. Arrggghhh.....I don't know if anyone else is getting the same problem, but I d/l'd the demo of NOFL (107mb! took two days on my dial-up) and now the thing tells me 'Program too big to fit in memory'. What's up with that? I played with compatibility modes, manually increased the memory allocation, etc. all to no avail. Has anyone a suggestion or solution? I would be much appreciative.
