HMV to sell VAT free games
In store kiosks exploit tax loophole
HMV look set to exploit a loophole in the law enabling them to sell games, CD's, DVD and Blu-ray films in store without charging VAT on them.
Kiosks positioned in HMV stores will allow you to order titles that will be shipped free from Guernsey thus taking advantage of the UK Treasury's rule that allows products shipped from outside the European Union costing under GBP 18 to be exempt from the 17.5 percent VAT charge.
Many Online retailers already use this tactic, HMV.com being one as well as Jersey based Play.com but this move into store based Kiosks is something of a first.
HMV promise that the service will be restricted to products not on the shelves, like out of stock games and harder to find DVD's, expect more news when we get it.
