PEGI slated by BBFC boss

Credibility questioned

The BBFC's head honcho, the increasingly vocal David Cooke, has told the UK's Times newspaper that PEGI's ratings are delivered by a couple "of blokes," and that accountability is a major problem for the voluntary ratings system.

The BBFC has of course been locked in something of a struggle with PEGI ever since the Byron Report hinted that the two systems could be confusing parents buying games for youngsters.

"The trouble is that it is not clear who PEGI is. Administration is handled by the Dutch film regulator, who subcontracts to a couple of blokes in Borehamwood," the boss said.

PEGI, meanwhile, has been busy attacking the BBFC's gaming credentials, while this tussle could intensify if one agency's position is threatened by future legislation.
