Pokemon Ruby

Ben assures us that he really is quite an ordinary bloke.

Let’s get this out of the way right now. I am a male, I am 21 years of age and I lead a normal, healthy (to some extent) life. I do, however, from time to time, play video games. As you may expect, occasionally, I do stumble across games that may be designed for a younger audience than myself. But, and this is a big but, I would never discriminate against a game because of it’s target audience. A good game is a good game, and it’s as simple as that.

Way back in 1998 (I think) I travelled to the States and bought myself a Gameboy pocket to replace my massive, yet much loved, Gameboy. Whilst making the purchase, I noticed stacks of a certain game title behind the counter. ‘What’s that?’ I asked. ‘That’s Pokemon’, replied the cashier. I bought a copy of the game and toddled off back to the hotel to have a go. Three hours later, when my eyes began trying to recess into my skull, I stopped playing. I was hooked. Ever since then, I have bought every single version of this game available to me. I’m proud to say…*gasp*… that I ‘like’ Pokemon.

So, when I saw the latest version in my local store, I had to get it. But before I start saying what has changed, I think I had better explain what Pokemon is, just in case anyone has been hiding under a rock for the past five years and thinks I’m completely insane…

Pokemon means Pocket Monsters. Easy, eh? During this game, you must catch these ‘pocket monsters’ by fighting them against each other, and when sufficiently weakened, catching them in a special ball (Pokeball). The aim of the game is to catch as many as you can, or ‘Gotta catch ‘em, all!’ (I’m so sorry for this, really I am. I sound like a Digitiser reviewer). Eventually, you can challenge Gyms and leaders, so you can be recognised as the Pokemon champion and the best of the best. It’s incredibly simple, yet immense fun.

The Pokemon you catch grow as you use them, gaining more moves and evolving into a new pokemon when they reach a high enough level. It becomes rather addictive and strangely worrying as you await, sweaty palmed, for your monster’s evolution.

I’m sure that most of you have seen, played or at least heard of Pokemon, so I’ll get down to telling you what has changed. Firstly and most importantly, there is a new range of monsters. Granted some of the original and most favoured Pokemon make a return (Geodude, Koffing, Abra, etc.) but there is a whole new cast of monsters to keep you entertained. Including yet more ultra rare Pokemon, for you to trade via the GBA link cable.

  16. The first Pokemon game was either Red or Blue. Then Green was released, then gold and silver, then crystal and now these! I'm not counting the Stadium or Snap type games here. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :D

  17. um the first pokemon games to come out for GameBoy were in this order:

    Game boy(and GBC and GBA)

    ========

    Green

    Red

    Blue(english version of green)

    gold

    silver

    cristal(did i spell that right?)

    sapphire

    ruby

and to get the master ball in sapphire and ruby you get it in the Team aqua or team magma hidout by lillycove(the cave) you only get one chance to get it so if you didnt get it there then you have to try the lotto untill you win.

  20. I'm the world's greatest Pokémaniac, and I love the new games! The difference between Ruby and Sapphire is the same as all the other double releases, they have some different Pokémon. Also, in Ruby your enemy is Team Magma and in Sapphire you fight Team Aqua. The graphics are so much better, and they've revamped the sound!

BTW, Green was released with Red and Blue in Japan, but it was never translated.

    Cheers!

  30. I agree it is a good game but I think it lacks what gold + silver had two worlds. It makes game play soo much better since if you've played them all after one world it just gets boring! Also leaving out the old pokemon means you can't really catch'em all

I agree pokemon rocks as the new kid on the block for me ovcourse.Im a poke fanatic my self even though im 11.But enough of that, have you heard of a missing.no cheat for pokemon red and blue if you havent then i will tell you firstly go to the guy who doesnt let you through in Virdian city in the begging talk to him first say yes then say no twice after go to cinibar city and surf down the right side of city then you will encounter the pokmon missing.no then defeat him dont catch him or it will muck up your game after you will meet pokemon above level 100 also the item in sixth place will be multiplied to the extent of the limitations carriable.

  43. Everyone, it's possible to get all 386 Pokemon. They are all in the game, no matter what any review says. I think there may be some sort of event that allows you to get them or something, but that's just my opinion. In the meantime however you must use a Gameshark, o other cheat cartridge to catch them. I was going to catch a Bulbasaur, and I actually battled one, but I wanted to complete the game first, and then complete my set. *This is not a lie*, please believe me!, just use a cheat cartridge and you can see for yourself - go to http://db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/pokemon_rs_na_gs.txt for a complete set of codes for each of the pokemon. If only I could get a screenshot or something to prove my point further... just try it for yourself, that's all the proof you need!
